Short season, small player pool, huge margins on the right imports.

Season
September to March, a handful of games each round

The basics

  • Fewer teams and fewer games than the NBA, so each individual game weighs far more.
  • Rosters are short, which means the top players play heavy minutes.
  • Imports and next-star recruits carry outsized scoring.

How scoring works

  • Standard box-score scoring: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, less turnovers and misses.
  • Efficiency matters — high-volume, low-percentage scorers can go backwards.
  • Bigs with rebound-and-block profiles offer the steadiest floors.

Strategy that actually moves the needle

  • Round structure varies week to week; count how many games each of your players actually has.
  • Back proven NBL producers over unknown imports until the rotation is clear.
  • In a small pool, being early on a breakout local is where leagues are won.

Your first week

  • Wait for the opening minutes patterns before committing to new imports.
  • Prioritise players on teams with a thin bench.
  • Use our free NBL stats hub to check per-minute production, not just totals.
