BACKBOARD BROWN | The Way Too Early Reaction To The First Games Of The NBA Season

Game 1 is in the books for all  NBA teams not named the Cavs or Nugget. We officially have 1.21% of this season’s data. So lets overreact to it, because, well because why not. We’ve missed basketball, its back, lets pick it apart - 

CELTICS VS PISTONS

Jaysum Tatum will be fine. Paul George looked good. Might be a tougher decision as to which Celtic you bring in next week. We double the data set over the weekend with Celts v Knicks at the Garden. Jalen Duren showed no signs of the contract saga effected him on the court, is he the forgotten big man we should be looking at?

KNICKS VS 76ERS

Decent start for the Philly Big 4, who made up 4 of the top 6 SC scores in this game. Hard to argue this is Maxey’s team, although there were periods where all 4 of them had the offense run through them. Maxey owners (and captainers) will be happy, although the 36 point outing was boosted by 12 points in STOCKS. Don’t sleep on the STOCKS MARKET REPORT, out every Monday.

SPURS VS THUNDER

Speaking of STOCKS, 3 of the top 4 scores in this game - SGA 37 points (12 in STOCKS), Chet 25 points (8 in STOCKS) and Wemby had an awful night shooting the ball still managed to salvage a score of 24, courtesy of 14 points in STOCKS. Wemby is so good a 12 and 13 with 6 blocks is underwhelming. Spurs need to get rid of Fox. There I said it. SGA is the Paul Gallen of NBA Supercoach, just accumulates points at will.

MAGIC VS HAWKS

An unusual empty bag of STOCKS for Jalen Johnson, limped his way to 25 SC points. A little underwhelming for those that chose him over the Greek Freak. Pablo promising the world with a 42 piece to begin the year. Watching for a 15 pointer in game 2. Is Franz injured to start the season?? Dyson Daniels scores a 28 courtesy of 5 steals. Have i mentioned how important STOCKS are???

WIZARDS VS BUCKS

Is Jamie Jacquez Jr (Temu JJJ), the mid range SF we were looking for to make us some early money? NO. Lets keep an eye on Jakucionis, he might be the only relevant Buck (to make a buck) player on this roster. Want to see them play a decent team before we say the Trae and AD combo is going to be bulk SC points for owners.

HORNETS VS NETS

Mikel Brown Jnr and Moritz Wagner are the 14th and 16th most owned players in SC, and returned 5 and 4 points respectfully. This roster is a dumpster fire. Don’t trust anyone. As the President of the Naz Reid fan club, he looked very good, but still to be seen how the return of KK and Coby White affect the the DNA of this roster. Bludger of a start for Miller. His floor is about this low, owners will hope.

HEAT VS TIMBERWOLVES

Is any team going to be able to run and gun at the same pace as the new version of the TWolves?? Ant Man an MVP candidate? Giannis 30 SC points is OK, it shouldve been more, but the pre season fear for this roster came true in game 1, there is no super reliable shooting around him. I am an owner, and a Heat fan. I am holding hope. For now. Kuminga 20 pointer with 10 points in STOCKS. Is he the mid range SF we need??

RAPTORS VS BULLS

Can the Bulls play their first game again, and just play an 81 game season? What a shit show, led by Caleb Wilson 16 points on 7 from 21 shooting, with 9 turnovers. Just managed his way to 4 SC points, courtesy of 8 points in STOCKS. This is the rookie road though, there will be plenty of bumps in it.

GRIZZLIES VS JAZZ

Someone forgot to tell Ty Jerome this was meant to be the Peterson vs Boozer showdown and main talking point of this game. Where did that real life NBA game come from, for 50 SC points?? Boozer was busy but shooting 2 of 15 is not good for SC business. Peterson looked a little lost, but again, patience is key here.

PACERS VS PELICANS

Who said Haliburton was on a minutes restriction?? 34 minutes, 29 SC points and a juicy combo with Zubac is brewing. Top scorer of the game was, checks notes, Yves Missi with 39 SC points, helped by, you guessed it, 10 points in STOCKS.

MAVS VS ROCKETS

The battle for (2nd best) in Texas was over at halftime, with Rockets leading 70 to 38, which makes Cooper Flagg top score for the game of 34 even more remarkable. 12th most popular player could be making a huge leap this year. VanFleet with 11 assists is the watch here, does an actual PG mean that Sengun is no longer a triple double threat every night? Shocking that having an actual PG meant this offense was humming.

LAKERS VS WARRIORS

I admire the courage, but laugh at the stupidity of rookie Yaxel jawing with Doncic. That rarely ends well. Curry deserves better in his twilight years, the Warriors are rubbish. Despite a rough shooting night Luka does enough for those that captained him. Kessler is the story here though. 26 points on 12 from 12 shooting, add in 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Lets pump the breaks on whether he is a must though, because he wont be going against too many frontcourts smaller (and older) than the Warriors. #FREESTEPH

SUNS VS BLAZERS

For those hoping Maluach was a genuine option over rookies in the C position, plans for the 2nd year big might need to be reevaluated. It was all ugly for the Suns though, so maybe we can disregard his plus/minus of minus 30 in 17 minutes. 81 game season for the Suns too. Need to watch Blazers again before we can get a read on how Lillard/Morant/Avdija are going to co exist.

KINGS VS CLIPPERS

Darius Acuff Jnr saw Caleb Wilson set the NBA record for worst plus/minus of minus 45 in a NBA debut, and said hold my beer and gave us a new NBA debut record of 19 shots. Growing pains in a terrible team to be expected, but surely it doesn’t get any worse than this. Sabonis scoring 39 points is a miracle, but I cant get around bigs that don’t block. 18 rebounds though, sheesh. Rui with the second most shots after Garland for the Clippers is a storyline to watch. Is he a genuine second option in a roster full of no options???
